Internet Grateful Med to be Retired
IGM Logo

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has begun to convert the Internet Grateful Med (IGM) databases on the old ELHILL mainframe into other web-based retrieval systems, including the new NLM Gateway. Note: For information on the NLM Gateway, see the November issue of Biomed Update: http://www.library.ucla.edu/libraries/biomed/update/nov00/gateway.html.

As with many library systems and databases, NLM is moving away from a mainframe-based system to a web-based system. Among other things, this allows for linking to web resources, such as full-text electronic journals. The PubMed@UCLA version of MEDLINE® is one database that now allows that option.

IGM ELHILL databases were last updated in December 2000, and are now static. The SDILINE search screen was deactivated in early February 2001. SDILINE searchers should use PubMed@UCLA's Cubby (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query/static/help/pmhelp.html#Cubby) feature for current awareness searching.

Search screens will be deactivated and you will be linked to other search systems for the following databases, effective April 2, 2001:

MEDLINE http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed
AIDSDRUGS http://www.actis.org
AIDSLINE http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov
AIDSTRIALS http://www.actis.org
ChemID http://chem.sis.nlm.nih.gov/chemidplus
DIRLINE http://dirline.nlm.nih.gov
HealthSTAR http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov
For HealthSTAR, the unique books are already in NLM's LOCATORplus and the unique journal citation data are already in the PubMed@UCLA system. Unique meeting abstracts have been added to the NLM Gateway.
OLDMEDLINE http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov
TOXLINE http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov
For TOXLINE, the TOXNET version of TOXLINE closely resembles the database available through IGM, and includes some updates of components never available through IGM.

The unique books listed in these databases are already in LOCATORplus. Once the unique journal citations are added to PubMed@UCLA from the four databases and the unique meeting abstracts added to the NLM Gateway, these database search screens will be discontinued.

Based on this timeline, NLM expects that IGM will be retired officially with many thanks by the end of June 2001.
